Q: Why are you the best person to write this book?
A: I have been writing for nearly forty years and have had thirteen books published, including three on naval and church history, and six for writers and teachers. When it comes to getting books published, I have done it all: self and commercial, print and electronic, print-on-demand, as well as managed my own short runs at printers. For the last eleven years I have been speaking and instructing on the topic of getting published at writers’ conferences and at a community college. With all this experience under my belt, I wrote Book Magic so others could learn what took me sixteen long years to absorb.

Q: How is this book different from other books on this topic?
A: At 130 pages, Book Magic is short, snappy, and to the point. I designed it to be read quickly and then dipped into when needed. The large appendix contains many examples, useful articles, and vital info and resources for aspiring authors from a writer’s perspective, not that of an agent or editor.

A: This book is about dream stories and how we are connected to each other even after we die.

A: I had a special dream when my husband died fourteen years ago and I researched the dream experience for ten years not finding anything on the topic. In 2007 I placed ads in community papers across the country asking people if they ever had someone close to them die and appear to them in a dream. Over three hundred people responded and 120 stories are in the book, including my own personal story.

A: Sexy blonde blues-singer Maxx (real name: Elizabeth) Maxwell thinks she’s on the verge of realizing her dream: success for her band and a career doing what she’s always wanted. But then her dashing and talented guitar player, Jimmy Nashville, plunges to his death from his ninth-floor window. Maxx refuses to believe the police when they decide Jimmy killed himself. Played out against a backdrop of blues and Manhattan bar bands, her quest for his killer takes her deep into his past—and turns up a surprising number of suspects.

Q: Why are you the best person to write this book?
A: I play blues guitar and I led my own band for five years. We rehearsed and performed in New York City. I’m also a lifelong mystery fan and a former college English teacher.

Q: How is this book different from other books on this topic?
A: It’s cozy with a twist. It takes the cozy genre out of the parlor and into the streets, but it preserves the cozy’s traditional emphasis on strong plotting, a good puzzle, and minimal, if any, violence.

Q: Is there anything else we should know about this book?
A: Lots of people have told me that reading it sent them running for their blues CDs and made them remember how much they love that musical genre.

Q: What is the book about?
A: Heart of Diamonds centers around a diamond smuggling scheme uncovered by TV journalist Valerie Grey while she is reporting on the endless civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. As she follows the trail of blood diamonds from Africa to an American televangelist in Atlanta and finally to the White House, powerful forces try to stop her from exposing it to the world.

One Amazon reviewer said, “There’s enough sometimes-bloody action and intense suspense to please the most demanding thriller addict.”

Q: Why are you the best person to write this book?
A: I am a journalist, with credits in dozens of national publications and thirty years in the television business, so while this is a work of fiction, it’s based on accurate research into actual events in this tragic country. I made two trips to Central Africa to research the novel, so many of the scenes have a strong sense of place.

Q: How is this book different from other books on this topic?
A: I hope it is in how accurately I portrayed the people of the Congo. Too often, Africans are made to seem simple, slow, or lazy. But they’re not! They can be as complex as a Greenwich Village artist and as entrepreneurial as a Wall Street hedge fund manager.

Q: Is there anything else we should know about this book?
A: Heart of Diamonds also addresses the major issues facing the Democratic Republic of Congo and much of Africa. More than five million people have died there since 1998, making what’s known as the Second Congo War the deadliest conflict since World War II—and it’s still going on. I write about rape as a weapon of terror, child soldiers, widespread corruption at all levels of government, and the very sad plight of the hundreds of thousands of refugees from the violence that continues to wrack the nation.
